De Maten Nature Reserve
De Maten Nature Reserve in Genk is one of the most remarkable natural areas in Limburg. The area consists of a chain of over thirty historic ponds, surrounded by heathland, marshes and forests. De Maten is an important habitat for rare birds, amphibians and dragonflies. The landscape has been shaped by centuries of fish farming and offers a unique combination of water, wetland nature and open heathland.
Wheelchair accessibility is partial. Boardwalks have been laid through the wetland area, some of which are suitable for wheelchairs. However, not all walking routes are fully accessible, as some paths may be narrow or uneven. There are no adapted toilets in the nature reserve itself. The starting car parks have reserved spaces for visitors with disabilities and the access to the area is flat.
De Maten is free to enter and open year-round. The area is accessible by car via the N76 and has several starting car parks. A visit is special in every season: in spring the birds sing in full voice, in summer dragonflies flutter over the ponds, and in autumn the heather turns purple. Combine your visit with a trip to nearby Bokrijk or the centre of Genk.
