Liermeers Nature Park Lier
The Liermeers forms a valuable patch of open countryside on the western edge of Lier, where the Kleine Nete and the Grote Nete meet. The area consists of hay meadows, rows of poplars and small wet meadowlands which fill in spring with marsh marigolds and cuckoo flowers. For anyone wanting to leave the bustle of Lier's town centre behind for a moment, the Liermeers is a peaceful spot with sweeping views over the typical river valleys of the Nete basin.
Accessibility is partial. The main route starts at the car park along the Aragonstraat and follows a semi-paved dolomite path that is easy to navigate by wheelchair or rollator in dry weather. After rain, some sections can soften, especially on the side paths that run across grass. There is no public toilet on site, so a short visit is best combined with a stop in the centre of Lier, where the Beguinage and the Grote Markt offer accessible sanitary facilities.
At the starting point there is a small car park with one accessible space. The entrance is level and has no thresholds or kissing gates. Anyone who likes to combine a nature route with culture can continue on to the centre of Lier after a walk in the Liermeers for a terrace on the Grote Markt or a visit to the Beguinage.
