Museum Dr. Guislain
Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent is a unique museum dedicated to the history of psychiatry. The museum is housed in the oldest psychiatric hospital in Belgium, an impressive neo-Gothic building dating from 1857. The permanent collection traces the evolution of mental health care through the centuries, with historical instruments, artworks and personal testimonies. The museum also regularly presents innovative exhibitions at the intersection of art, science and society.
The museum is fully accessible for wheelchair users. The entrance is step-free and all exhibition spaces are reachable via lifts and wide corridors. The historic rooms have been carefully adapted without compromising the character of the building. Adapted toilets are available. Companions of visitors with disabilities receive free admission to the museum.
Museum Dr. Guislain is located in the Ekkergem neighbourhood of Ghent and is accessible by bus and tram. It has its own car park with reserved spaces for visitors with disabilities. The museum has a pleasant museum cafe with an inner garden. The museum combines well with a visit to the nearby Ghent city centre.
