Kempen (Campine) hospitality guide: 10 accessible restaurants, cafés and hotels along the walking and cycling routes

The Kempen (Campine) offers not only 2175 km of cycling junctions and dozens of adapted walking routes — the hospitality scene has grown along with it in recent years, with more and more restaurants, cafés and hotels that are genuinely designed or renovated to be barrier-free. For anyone planning a day cycling trip or walking weekend, it's useful to know in advance where you can comfortably take a break.

In this guide: 10 adapted hospitality addresses spread across the Antwerp Kempen and Limburg Kempen, with our honest assessment for each address.

Practical hospitality tips for Kempen outings

Book in advance on sunny weekends. All the above addresses are busy in July-August. Reserve 1 week in advance for lunch and 2 weeks for a dinner slot.

Ask for a wheelchair table when booking. Most venues have one or two "preferred" tables with extra manoeuvring space — reserve those specifically.

Combine with a cultural-natural outing. Turnhout + Groot Begijnhof, Mol + Zilvermeer, Kasterlee + Hoge Rielen, Genk + Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen — all four make a full day possible.

For multi-day stays: Hotel Corsendonk Turnhout or De Zwaluw Kasterlee are the strongest choices with verified adapted rooms.

For a picnic on the way: at all the large provincial domains (Bokrijk, Zilvermeer, Domein Kiewit Hasselt) there are adapted picnic tables — bring your own lunch and save for an extensive dinner in the city.

In conclusion

The Kempen hospitality scene has grown strongly alongside the 782,000-visitor tourism sector. For wheelchair users, the region is now a distinctly reliable destination for gastronomy and overnight stays — not as well known as the coast or the Ardennes, but with a stronger focus on adapted facilities.
