Grote Markt Antwerp
The Grote Markt of Antwerp is one of the most iconic city squares in Flanders. It is dominated by the Renaissance City Hall (UNESCO World Heritage as part of the belfries) and surrounded by sixteen richly decorated guild houses. In the middle stands the Brabo Fountain, which tells the story of the legend of the giant Antigoon. The square is the beating heart of the historic city centre.
Accessibility is largely good. The square is completely level and has recently been redesigned with smooth bluestone strips between the cobblestones, allowing comfortable wheelchair use. Most of the guild houses are nowadays in use as hospitality venues with accessible entrances; however, not all historic buildings are reachable on the ground floor. The city hall has, after recent renovation, a fully accessible main entrance with lift to the upper floor, including an adapted toilet.
Adapted toilets are available in the city hall, the Vleeshuis, and various hospitality venues. Disabled parking spaces are provided in the underground Grote Markt car park, from which a direct lift leads to the square level. The Grote Markt is an excellent base for a wheelchair walk to the Cathedral of Our Lady, the Rubens House, and the Scheldt banks.
Good to know
- Reservation
- No booking required — the square is public. For the accessible city hall (lift + accessible toilet), groups simply need to make an appointment.
- Busy and quiet times
- Busiest on Saturday afternoons, in December (Christmas market) and during city festivals such as Sinksen. Early mornings or Sunday mornings are a quieter time for photos.
- Things to note
- The square has been recently redesigned with bluestone strips between the cobblestones — comfortably rollable. Not every guild house is reachable on the ground floor; restaurant entrances vary.
- Visit tip
- The underground Grote Markt car park has a direct lift up to square level. Combine with the Cathedral of Our Lady (level route, 200 m) and the Scheldt banks via the level quayside.
