Grote Markt Mechelen
The Grote Markt of Mechelen is the lively heart of this old archiepiscopal city. The square is dominated by the late Gothic City Hall (the former cloth hall) and by the imposing Saint Rumbold's Tower, which at 97 metres is one of the tallest church towers in Belgium. Around it stand beautiful historic buildings, including the statue of Margaret of Austria, who conducted the Burgundian court here.
Accessibility is excellent. The Grote Markt has been recently fully redesigned with smooth paving and wide walking zones; the old cobblestones have largely been replaced by smooth slabs that are comfortable to navigate. The city hall is accessible via an adapted entrance on the side, with lift to the upper floor. Saint Rumbold's Tower has an accessible entrance on the ground floor, although climbing the Skywalk via 538 steps is not feasible for wheelchair users.
Adapted toilets are available at the reception point on the Vismarkt and in the city hall. Disabled parking spaces are provided in the underground Grote Markt car park, from which a lift leads directly to the square. The Grote Markt is an ideal base for an accessible wheelchair walk through Mechelen, with Hof van Busleyden, Vismarkt, and the Dyle banks within walking distance.
