The Heritage Museum in Eeklo brings the history of the Meetjesland to life through a varied collection of folk objects, artisanal tools and historic photographs. The museum is housed in a beautiful town house on Boelarestraat, which was thoroughly renovated a few years ago. The rotating themed exhibitions each shed new light on the rich past of the region and are particularly suitable for anyone who wants to discover Belgian local history.

During the renovation, accessibility was placed at the heart of the design. A spacious lift connects the three floors, and all exhibition spaces are step-free. The corridors are wide enough for power wheelchairs, and you can turn around easily in the central main hall. The reception desk is at an adapted height and volunteers are happy to help with an accessible museum guide or an audio guide with subtitles. On request, a tailored guided tour can be organised for groups with reduced mobility.

An accessible toilet is available on the ground floor, just by the entrance hall. The museum shop sells books on local history and regional produce. Parking in the immediate area is a little harder; the nearest car park with disabled spaces is a hundred metres away on foot at the Markt. The Markt is fully level and easy to navigate.

Combine your visit to the Heritage Museum with a stroll through the centre of Eeklo. The Markt, the town hall and the renovated Saint Vincent's Church form a fine ensemble. The Meetjesland itself is a wheelchair-friendly area for day trips, with numerous level cycle routes and small villages that invite exploration at a child's pace or in complete tranquillity.
