Lampernisse nature reserve
The Lampernisse nature area, located in the Westhoek polders south of Diksmuide, is one of the most beautiful open polder landscapes in Flanders. The reserve stretches across hundreds of hectares of meadows, old polder watercourses and creeks that flood in winter and attract thousands of meadow birds in spring. Lampernisse is known for the presence of black-tailed godwit, lapwing, redshank and other rare breeding birds. The silent and cultural landscape around the little church of Lampernisse, an eye-catcher with its typical polder church tower, breathes a timeless calm.
Accessibility is good for those who explore via the paved polder roads. The narrow country lanes around the nature area are navigable by car or wheelchair and offer views over the open landscape. There are no walking paths through the nature area itself for visitors, as the reserve is strictly protected. Adapted toilets are not available in the area; use the facilities in Diksmuide or Veurne for your visit. The flat character of the polders makes wheelchair travel on the roads trouble-free.
Parking is possible along the polder roads in widened spots, and there are a few visitor spots at the little church of Lampernisse. The area is reachable from Diksmuide or Pervijze via adapted country roads. Combine your visit with a trip along the Yser or a stop in Diksmuide for an accessible lunch break. It is above all an area for those who want to enjoy spaciousness and silence.
