Genoels-Elderen Wine Castle
Genoels-Elderen Wine Castle, located in Riemst in the Limburg region of Haspengouw, is the largest wine estate in Flanders with more than 22 hectares of vineyards. The castle estate, with its 16th-century origins, produces award-winning Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and sparkling wines made according to the classic Champagne method. During a guided tour, visitors can discover the wine cellars, chapel, castle park and production areas, concluding with a guided wine tasting in the tasting room.
Accessibility is partial due to the historic character of the site. The modern reception area, shop and tasting room are level and well wheelchair-accessible with an adapted toilet. The vineyards and parts of the castle park have semi-paved paths that are passable in dry weather. Some historic parts of the buildings and the castle cellars have thresholds and narrow passages; the guide adapts the tour to the abilities of the participants.
The estate has ample parking with spaces near the entrance. Genoels-Elderen lies between Tongeren and Maastricht, easily reachable via the E313 motorway. Tours and tastings are by reservation; when booking, it is advisable to mention wheelchair use and any specific needs for the best experience.
