Tongeren Town Hall
The town hall of Tongeren stands at the heart of the oldest city in Belgium, directly opposite the famous statue of Ambiorix on the Grote Markt. This classical building from 1737 replaced the older town hall that burned down in the seventeenth century. The symmetrical facade with arcades on the ground floor and the upper storeys with balcony define the city heart. Inside, the town hall preserves fine historic halls and modern offices in which the city services operate.
The front facade is reached by a few steps, but there is an adapted side entrance with a ramp and automatic doors. A lift connects the public floors, including the reception and the wedding hall. The historic aldermen's hall is reachable by lift but has a few smaller thresholds that can be overcome with assistance. An accessible toilet is available on the ground floor. During ceremonies such as weddings, the city can offer additional support for guests with a wheelchair.
The Grote Markt has been redesigned with even cobblestones and is well navigable by wheelchair. Accessible parking spaces are located around the market and in the underground car park. Combine a visit with the Gallo-Roman Museum, the Basilica of Our Lady or the Beguinage of Tongeren for a rich historic day in this ancient city.
