The Walloon Ardennes have — contrary to what many think — a surprisingly rich offer of adapted walking routes. The key: choose lakeshores, province domains and paved valley paths instead of the classic hill treks. Lakes such as Butgenbach, Robertville and Nisramont have paved shoreline loops; domains such as Mirwart and Chevetogne have adapted forest roads.
In this guide: 10 adapted walking spots in the Walloon Ardennes, structured by sub-region. Follows on from our Walloon Ardennes main pillar.
🏞️ Lake loops (flat waterside shores)
1. Lac de Butgenbach
Lake in German-speaking Belgium with a paved shoreline loop. Ideal for wheelchair users who want to walk flat with a water view.
What works: paved main path around parts of the lake, adapted picnic areas, adapted sanitary facilities at the visitor point.
2. Lac de Robertville
Lake in the Warche valley — similar concept to Butgenbach but slightly smaller. Paved main path along the shore.
3. Lac de Warche Malmedy
Smaller Malmedy lake with adapted shoreline paths. Combine with a visit to Malmedy centre.
4. Lac des Doyards Vielsalm
Vielsalm lake with adapted walking infrastructure. Ideal for a quiet nature outing.
5. Lac de Nisramont
Reservoir in the Ourthe valley — dramatic nature setting. Adapted viewing platforms.
🌳 Province domains (adapted facilities as standard)
6. Domaine de Mirwart
Large Walloon forest domain with paved main paths, adapted picnic areas and adapted sanitary facilities. Part of the province domain network in Luxembourg Province.
7. Domaine de Berinzenne (Spa)
Forest domain around Spa with adapted nature routes. Perfectly combined with a cultural visit to Spa centre.
8. Domaine de Palogne
River domain in the Ourthe valley. Paved shoreline paths, adapted facilities.
🕳️ Caves and unique landscapes
9. Grottes de Han — adapted wildlife park
Besides the cave itself (partly adapted — verify which routes) the Grottes de Han domain has an adapted wildlife park route through a large fenced nature area where European fauna (wolves, bears, bison) roams.
10. Hautes Fagnes-Trientale — high moor at ~700 m
Unique Belgian high-moor landscape on the border with Germany. Limited adapted — some boardwalk paths through the moor are suitable for wheelchairs provided the weather is dry. Verify via Maison du Parc Botrange which paths are currently accessible.

Practical walking tips for the Walloon Ardennes
Weather planning: the Walloon Ardennes get more rain than Flanders (Atlantic influence + altitude). Semi-paved paths are softer after rain — check the weather forecast.
Wheelchair type: for paved lakeshores and province-domain main paths any wheelchair works. For the Hautes Fagnes boardwalk paths and longer semi-paved routes, larger wheels or a handbike are more comfortable.
Season timing: May-June (blossom + fresh weather) and September-October (autumn colours + fewer mosquitoes) are the sweet spots. July-August: can be hot and busy, especially at Grottes de Han and the lakes.
Insects: ticks remain active until the first frost — long trousers + insect spray in the forest.
Mosquitoes by the lakes: August evenings — mosquito spray helps.
Adapted sanitary facilities: all major province domains and lake visitor points have adapted toilets. If in doubt, call ahead by phone.
Disabled parking: standard at all major locations. Arrive early on sunny weekends — disabled parking spaces fill up quickly in July-August.
Combine with culture: each of the lakes and domains lies 15-30 minutes' drive from a cultural city (Malmedy, Stavelot, Bastogne, Dinant, Spa). Ideal for a multi-day stay alternating walking + culture.

In closing
Walking in the Walloon Ardennes with a wheelchair is an unfairly underused option for wheelchair users — the lakeshores and province domains are equipped with paved infrastructure, and the landscape quality is unique in Belgium (dramatic reservoirs, high moor, wildlife park). For those who already know urban walks and are looking for nature depth: this is the strongest option on home soil.
Our recommendation: start with Lac de Butgenbach + Malmedy centre in one day — together a strong introduction to the eastern Walloon Ardennes.
